Training paediatric surgeons to offer specialized pediatric surgery services..

Until 2008 Uganda had 1 board certified pediatric surgeon given the required 400 pediatric surgeons for the 40 Million people as recommended by WHO. The PSFL working with the College of Surgeons of East central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) is conducting a formal Pediatric Surgery Fellowship training since 2014 and a total of 6 pediatric surgeons have been trained and they are all offering specialized pediatric surgery services within the country. Currently there are 4 fellows in the 3-year training program. Our dream is to see that the training for surgeon goes in tandem with the training for pediatric anesthesiologists, pediatric general and critical care nurses as well as other support services.

We target to train and pass out at least 3 pediatric surgeons per year for the next 10 years in order to have equitable distribution of pediatric surgeons all over the country Uganda. This can be addressed by mobilizing financial resources to support the trainees, the trainers and training facilities in addition to creating training partnerships with high income countries to enable our products to have rotations and exposure in those settings
