Sensitization Programs & Seminars
Our periodic, audience targeted skills transfer workshops and seminars.
Uganda with a population of over 40 million people has 7 board certified Pediatric Surgeons compared to the recommended ratio of 1 pediatric surgeon /100,000 people by World Health Organization ( WHO) .This indicates a deficit of close to 400 pediatric surgeons required by the country leaving the lives of the children to non-pediatric surgeons for their surgical diseases and in some instances this has led to delayed referrals , surgery related complications, permanent disabilities and loss lives .
To avert this PSFL has organized periodic, audience targeted skills transfer workshops and seminars targeting the medical workers in regional referral hospitals. The sessions involve creating awareness and equipping frontline health workers with skills sets tailored to their working environment.
The workshops have included; insights in emergency pediatric surgery conations, disease recognition and referral, neonatal transport, trauma in children and recognition of children with complicated surgical disease. with a couple of workshops conducted in some regions we have noticed an increase in number of babies referred top facilities with pediatric surgeons as a result of increased awareness following a series of workshops and seminars .
The major bottleneck is funding for this activity to expand the course content and target audience in order to reduce on lifelong morbidity for children as we plan to conduct monthly workshops in the different regional referral hospital s country wide and develop standardized training visual materials and learning aids.
