Creating Lifesaving Solutions for Children Across Uganda
Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Training
PSFL works with the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA) to train more pediatric surgeons in Uganda. Until 2008, Uganda had only one certified pediatric surgeon. Through the fellowship program started in 2014, we have trained six pediatric surgeons who are now serving in different hospitals across the country. Currently, four fellows are undergoing training. Our goal is to train at least three pediatric surgeons every year for the next 10 years, so that every region of Uganda has access to specialized child surgery services.
Skills Transfer Workshops & Seminars
To improve the knowledge and skills of health workers, PSFL organizes workshops and seminars in regional hospitals. These workshops focus on emergency child surgery, recognizing serious conditions, neonatal care, and proper referral systems. Many children die or suffer complications because local health workers are not well-trained to handle surgical conditions. These workshops help reduce such problems by equipping frontline workers with practical skills that suit their working environment.
Outreach Surgery Camps
Most pediatric surgeons are based in Kampala, leaving many children in rural areas without proper care. PSFL organizes outreach surgery camps where a team of surgeons, anesthetists, and nurses travel to upcountry hospitals to perform life-saving surgeries. These camps have been held in hospitals like Masaka, Mbarara, and Soroti. So far, over 1,000 children have been treated. The camps also help local health workers learn new skills. However, transport, medicine, and equipment for these camps are expensive, so we rely on support from partners and donors.
Community Awareness & Sensitization
Many parents and even health workers do not know the signs of serious surgical conditions in children. PSFL conducts sensitization programs to raise awareness in communities and health centers. These programs help people recognize when a child needs urgent surgery and how to take action. When communities are aware, children get help earlier and have a better chance of recovery.
Research and Publication
PSFL collects data from our activities and uses it to do research. We publish articles in medical journals to share our findings and help others learn. This also helps us advocate for better policies and planning in pediatric surgery. By sharing our experiences, we can help improve the care for children not just in Uganda, but across Africa.
Support for Pediatric Surgery Fellows
Becoming a pediatric surgeon is not easy. The training takes several years and is expensive. PSFL supports students by helping pay tuition, providing learning materials, and giving mentorship. This support ensures that we train more doctors who can save children’s lives in the future.
International Partnerships & Collaborations
We work with international doctors, hospitals, and training institutions to improve pediatric surgery in Uganda. Through partnerships, our surgeons and students get opportunities to learn from global experts. We also host international fellows and trainers who come to share their knowledge and help in camps, workshops, and training programs.
Emergency & Epidemic Response Support
During times like the COVID-19 pandemic, PSFL supported health workers in handling surgical cases safely. We provided emergency supplies, guidelines, and assistance to hospitals facing difficulties. We continue to stand ready to support the health system during any future crisis affecting pediatric care.
Resource Mobilization
To run our activities, we need financial support and medical supplies. PSFL mobilizes resources both locally and internationally. These funds help us conduct surgeries, train doctors, buy equipment, and run workshops. We invite individuals, companies, and organizations to support our cause so we can help more children.
Social Reintegration of Patients
After surgery, children need help to return to normal life. Some may have missed school or need emotional support. PSFL supports children and families through this process. We work to make sure the child can go back to school and be accepted by their community.
Combating Stigma
Children with birth defects or surgical conditions often face stigma. Their families may also be isolated. PSFL provides social support and works to educate communities so that these children are treated with respect and dignity. We want all children to feel loved and included, no matter their medical history.
