One-Day-Old Baby Operated for Sacrococcygeal Teratoma – A Tumor at Birth

This is a true story of a baby who was only one day old when she was brought to the hospital with a large swelling on her lower back. The doctors diagnosed it as sacrococcygeal teratoma, a rare type of tumor that grows in babies from birth.

The baby was quickly taken to the operation room by a team of skilled paediatric surgeons. The surgery was successful, and the entire tumor was removed. After the operation, the baby recovered well and was discharged in good condition.

This story carries an important message: All pregnant mothers are encouraged to go for an ultrasound scan during pregnancy. This helps doctors detect such swellings or abnormalities early. When problems like these are discovered before birth, the mother can be referred to a hospital with paediatric surgeons who are trained to treat such conditions safely.

Early detection and surgery can save the baby’s life and prevent the swelling from turning into cancer. At Paediatric Surgical Foundation, we continue to support children with surgical needs and raise awareness about the importance of prenatal care and timely referral.
