A Story of Hope: Conjoined Twins Diagnosed at Birth and Referred for Surgery

This is a real story about a set of conjoined twins who were born in Uganda. The diagnosis of conjoined twins was not made during pregnancy. It was only discovered at the time of delivery, which came as a big surprise to the medical team and the family.

After birth, the twins were immediately referred to a team of paediatric surgeons for further management and planning for separation. Conjoined twins are very rare, and their treatment needs careful planning by specialists, with support from a big hospital that has the right equipment and experienced doctors.

This story highlights a very important lesson: every pregnant mother should go for an ultrasound scan. This scan helps doctors to see the baby while still in the womb and detect any problems early, like if twins are conjoined. When such conditions are discovered early, mothers can be referred to big hospitals in time, where special doctors like paediatric surgeons are available to handle such complex cases.

The Paediatric Surgical Foundation continues to advocate for safe deliveries, early diagnosis, and access to specialist care for all children in Uganda. We also encourage all health centres to advise mothers to go for ultrasound scans during pregnancy. Early detection saves lives.
