This is a true story of a 2-day-old baby who was delivered by caesarean section after a long and difficult labor. After birth, the doctors noticed a large swelling around the baby’s bottom. The condition was diagnosed as a Giant Sacrococcygeal Teratoma, which is a type of tumor that can grow in babies before they are born.
The baby was quickly referred to a team of paediatric surgeons. Surgery was done to remove the tumor, and the operation was successful. The baby recovered well with no complications and was discharged home in good health.
Key message: Early diagnosis and timely surgery are very important in such cases. Mothers are encouraged to attend all antenatal checkups and do ultrasound scans during pregnancy. These scans help detect such conditions early so that proper care can be planned in time.
At Paediatric Surgical Foundation, we are proud to share such successful stories and continue to support children in need of surgical care.
